Connecting bass guitar to computer with Linux

with 3 comments

I tried to connect my bass guitar to my computer mac/garageband style with no luck. It is unlikely that connecting your bass directly to your soundcard’s mic/line-in will produce a workable sound. The issue is amplification and you will be disappointed with the results if you try to use software to fix your amplification problems.

So get a preamp and then do the connecting. I bought an Art Tube MP Project Series USB preamp for £50 and I am happy with the sound it puts out. It connects to your computer by usb and also has the added the added feature of being able to power a mic.

Regarding Linux I am having success using the following software on Ubuntu 7.10 to play and record my bass;

  • Jackd sound server
  • Jack Control
    • Make sure your preamp is selected in Setup -> Input device and your speakers are selected as the Output device
    • Make your sure your input and output ports are connected in Connections
  • Ardour for recording
