Windows Server on Fedora for MCSE Training
My employer gave me funding some time ago to do a MCSE. They wouldn’t quit stretch to the £5000 bootcamp so I am left to study from home. An important part of home study is having access to Windows Server. The following descibes the method I am using to run Windows Server, using Fedora and vmware, without having to reformat my drive and kill my MBR.
- Install vmware server on your Fedora box (see previous posts for further help)
- Download and burn Windows Server 180 Day Evaluation Version. You may already have the CD if you have purchased any of the Microsoft Press books.
- In vmware select ‘Create a New Virtual Machine’ and follow the wizard’s instructions for Windows Server.
- Power on your new virtual machine and you will be able to install Windows Server from the CD you burned previously.
You will now be able to access Windows Server and get first hand experience of using the system. The only bad news is that 180 days goes quicker than you think!
Fedora Core 6, installing vmware
Vmware magically allows you to run virtual OSs within your existing system.
I was having trouble getting vmware running under FC6, this guy really helped (attached as pdf in case link breaks)
Fedora Core 6, Restore MBR with Grub
I tried to install SUSE 9.3 today on my iDeq box and was left very unimpressed. The installation broke and knackered my MBR.
